Understanding the Certificate of Sponsorship for UK Jobs
A Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) is a critical requirement for anyone applying for a work visa in the UK, particularly under the Skilled Worker Visa route. It’s not a physical document but an electronic reference number issued by a UK-licensed employer.
Your potential UK employer must first become a registered sponsor with the Home Office to issue this certificate. Once you’ve been offered a qualifying job, they will assign a CoS to you, detailing your role, salary, and start date. You’ll then use this reference number in your visa application.
There are two types of CoS: “Defined” for applicants outside the UK and “Undefined” for those already inside. The CoS must be used within three months of being assigned and your job role must match the code of practice for the occupation.
Without a valid Certificate of Sponsorship, you won’t be able to proceed with your visa application. So ensure your employer is aware of the correct procedures and requirements.
If you’ve gone through the process or are waiting for your certificate, feel free to discuss your journey here. Let’s help each other navigate this crucial step in the UK immigration process.
